Are you ready?

As some of you may know this past week has been one that I do not ever want to go through again. Sunday, May 20th, started out as a day of celebration. I woke that morning to the tune of “Happy Birthday” and my lovely children reminding me that I am almost 40! By that night, 9pm to be exact, I found myself in the ER with my husband who was in the most excruciating pain. Monday morning at 4am we walked out of the ER not feeling any better and went home. As he lay in bed still inpain he would express that he felt like he was going to die! Of course he was unaware that had been a thought I had been fighting in my own mind. I had to know that whatever was going on, if it was going to take my husbands life that he was ready to meet God. So, while he lay there in pain for a brief moment we were eye to eye and I asked him if he died would he go to heaven. Was he ready to meet Jesus? If he wasn’t sure that we can make it right with God right now. No words were said, his eyes slowly closed and he slept for a little while. That afternoon we were in the Surgen’s office, early Tuesday he was in surgery having his gallbladder removed. His liver was shutting down and his kidneys had begun to fail. I have never seen my husband so sick.

I have started to write on several topics for this month and nothing seemed to feel right. I was talking to David (he is feeling much better now) about it and this is what he said, “You know when I was really sick and in so much pain I didn’t think about God or making things right. I thought I was going to die and all I was thinking about was the pain going away. Even when we were sitting in the ER that never crossed my mind. God or heaven. Things were happening so fast that I really didn’t have time to think about it and the pain was so great. When you are in the middle of something like that you don’t have time to think about all that other stuff. So, why don’t you write about that. Are you ready?”

My husband does that kind of stuff to me a lot. Shares this awesome wisdom and insight and yet I am uncertain about the state of his own soul. I leave that between him and Jesus, but I will take his suggestion because I believe what he said was so profound. When you are in the middle of a crisis or looking death in the face….are you ready to die and stand before Jesus. The bible says that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord (Phil 2:9-11). Life can end at any moment. What are you waiting for? A more opportune time? Do you think submitting to follow Christ is boring and nothing but a bunch of rules? Maybe you have an ill opinion about Christians that keeps you from submitting to follow Christ? I know that I use to think that God was nothing but a rule maker, didn’t want anyone to have fun and those Christians! I’d rather take my chances outside the church. We have an enemy named Satan that wants to use every lie there is to keep us from having a relationship with our Creator. He wants to keep you from the only One that can give you victory in your life. Jesus said that the enemy comes to kill, steal and destroy but I have come to give you life more abundantly (John 10:10). If you have a bunch of dead things in your life it is from the enemy. God is life (Col 3:4). Everything good comes from God (James 1:17). There is freedom in Jesus (Luke 4:18-21). Freedom from our sin, freedom from what others think about us, freedom from our past, freedom from past hurts and rejections. Many of us have been hurt by Christians and I am really sorry for that. I am sad to say that I have probably hurt some people along my journey and if you are reading this and I have hurt you I am really sorry. I pray you forgive me. It is a shame though that more people seem to be hurt by Christians than any other group of people. There is nothing that God does not see and He is our vindicator. He restores the hurt and broken hearted (Psalm 147:3). My part is making sure that my heart is right. My relationship with God has become more important than how some foolish people act.

Most of us when we put our minds to it there is nothing that anyone can say or do that can change our minds. So, I ask you, why allow someone who is acting not the way that they should decide for you whether or not you are going to submit to Christ and have a victorious life? I pray that those who are struggling with this really think about that. I would NEVER go back to my old life! The more I seek Him, the more He reveals Himself to me, the more I fall in love with Him and the more I want to know more about Him. The more I am amazed that God would send His only Son to die on a cross for my sins (John 3:16). Would you submit and seek God today? He promises if you seek Him you will find Him (1 Chr 28:9). The bible says “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation” (Romans 10:9-10). So I ask you one last time. Are you ready?Tomorrow may be too late. ~ Missy
